Amish Delight:

An Amish Pinup

Amish Delight is a colorful and kitschy reflection on the idea of fantasies through the male gaze. These models are placed within a set environment, mainly adorned by objects to be interacted with to further emphasize that this is not a real world, these women do not exist. These scenarios come to life only in the mind, which itself lacks details and distorts what it sees. These pictures are taken straight on, lighting lacking intense depth from the shadows with sets that don’t have a sky-to-ground separation. This setup was given to promote an “attractive flatness” that a passing mind can envision. The idea of fantasy further ties into the Amish attire as the juxtaposition between such colors, the modest dress form, and the suggestive poses conflict with Amish morals of modesty, humility, and hard work. The models are delicately posed, forced into a performative state with their plastic legs and their eyes held to the viewer in a domestic domain meant for hard work and concentration. Such a conflict between female sexualization and a modest, Christian lifestyle further questions why the male gaze is willing to ignore vital context when the preferred result is one-dimensional and inauthentic. From a non-binary perspective, I believe the enticement of women comes from their multi-dimensional character, and the Amish lifestyle to be admirable. When both women and the Amish are distorted and ignored from their true essence the end result appears to be as enticing as a magazine cover or pinup poster, their attention span held only for a few minutes or in passing.
